The Difference Between Buying and Owning
Okay, you’ve probably already read general cost of acquisition information. A lot of times, that’s where potential owners aim their max budget around. However, the price of the boat is the easy number. You pay for it, sign the paperwork, and eventually get the keys. Then boat ownership begins.
From a 25-foot runabout kept on a trailer to a professionally crewed superyacht, every boat creates an ecosystem of ongoing expenses. Some of these costs arrive predictably every month. Others appear once a season, every few years, or rather inconveniently on a Sunday afternoon when something mechanical decides it has enjoyed enough boating for the weekend.
As you know, boats are rarely purchased because someone expects them to outperform the S&P 500. They are purchased for what they make possible: time on the water, travel, privacy, family experiences, entertaining, exploration, and a level of freedom and luxury that is difficult to replicate ashore.
But there is a considerable difference between being able to buy a boat and being comfortable owning one. At Boat Rankings, we think that distinction deserves more attention. So rather than offering another oversimplified percentage of the purchase price, we’re going with a wider scope.
This is the true cost of boat ownership.
There Is No “10% Rule”
One of boating’s most repeated financial rules is that owners should expect to spend roughly 10% of a boat’s purchase price each year on ownership.
It’s convenient, though like most overused phrases, it isn’t particularly reliable.
Purchase price and operating cost don’t always move together. For larger yachts, current professional cost models generally treat crew, fuel, dockage, insurance, maintenance and refits, management, communications, compliance and contingency as separate budget categories. Vessel age, size, complexity, itinerary and usage can matter more than the price originally paid.
That’s why the better question is What will this particular boat require from me while I own it?
The 26 Major Costs of Boat Ownership

Exactly what boat ownership costs look like depends considerably on the vessel and how it is used. A trailerable boat may avoid marina dockage but introduce storage and trailer expenses. A larger yacht can add such necessary items as professional crew, yacht management, sophisticated onboard systems, and tenders. International and commercially operated yachts can introduce another layer of expenses involving flag-state requirements, regulatory compliance, and administration.
Not every boat owner will encounter every expense below, and certainly not every year. Some annual boat expenses are predictable, while others are seasonal, usage-driven or appear only every several years (usually with impeccable timing). The categories below provide a comprehensive overview of all the expenses to consider when calculating the true cost of owning a boat.

The Final Anchor Point

Reading through every possible expense associated with boat ownership could make the whole proposition sound slightly absurd. Well relax, it kind of is.
In fairness, if you list every possible expense associated with owning a house, driving a luxury automobile or having children, those endeavors start sounding financially questionable too. That’s not really the point.
The unpleasant ownership experiences tend to occur when buyers stretch to acquire the maximum boat their purchase budget permits and leave too little room for everything that happens afterward.
A boat that fits comfortably within the total ownership budget provides considerably more freedom. And perhaps most importantly, you don’t resent the boat for costing exactly what a boat like that was always going to cost.
Ultimately, the purchase price tells you whether you can acquire the boat, but the ownership budget tells you whether you can truly enjoy it. For us, that’s the number you must get right.
